Hadlee Bonnet Crochet Pattern

The Hadlee Bonnet crochet pattern makes the perfect thoughtful baby gift for a baby shower, toddler birthday, or make just for fun for your own kids. You can even make one for an older sibling because the pattern includes four sizes: newborn, baby, toddler, and child.

General Instructions: The Hadlee Bonnet is a simple crochet pattern in four sizes from newborn to child. We will begin by working in the round at the back of the bonnet. Then we will work back and forth in rows for the remainder of the bonnet, ending with the ties.

Materials: LB Collection, 100% superwash merino or any size 3 (DK/light worsted) yarn can be used; 75 (102, 134, 168) yds

Supplies: H/5mm crochet hook (or size needed for correct gauge), yarn needle

Gauge: Diameter after round 4 = 3.25”

Finished Measurements: Measurements are taken with the hat laid flat. Measurements are approximate and may vary by half an inch.

Finished width: 5 (6, 7, 7.5) inches

Finished height: 6 (6.5, 7.25, 7.5) inches

Suggested Sizing: newborn (baby, toddler, child); Head circumference up to 14 (16, 18, 20) inches

Abbreviations:

Ch: chain

Ea: each

Hdc: half double crochet

Inc: increase (2 hdc in same stitch)

Rep: repeat

Rnd(s): round(s)

Sc: single crochet

Sl st: slip stitch

St(s): stitch(es)

Pattern Note: Ch 1 and 2 at the beginning of a round/row counts as 1 stitch.

Directions: Create a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 9 hdc in ring, pull ring tight, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (10)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 1 hdc in top of ch 2 from previous rnd, 2 hdc in ea st around, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (20)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, inc in next st, *1 hdc, inc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (30)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 1 hdc, inc, *2 hdc, inc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (40)

Newborn size: stop here and skip down to decorative stitches section.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, 2 hdc, inc, *3 hdc, inc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (50)

Baby size: stop here and skip down to decorative stitches section.

*Toddler and Child sizes have different instructions for Rnd 6.*

Rnd 6 (toddler size only): Ch 2, 6 hdc, inc, *7 hdc, inc: rep from * 5x, 2 hdc, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (56)

Rnd 6 (child size only): Ch 2, 3 hdc, inc, *4 hdc, inc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (60)

Decorative Stitches:

For remainder of pattern, do not join after last stitch in each round. Turn and work back and forth in rows. We will no longer be increasing, so the stitch count will remain the same.

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in next hdc, *sl st, hdc; rep from * around, do not join after last hdc, turn.

Row 2: Ch1, sl st in first hdc, *hdc, sl st; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in sl st, *sl st, hdc; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Hdc Rows:

Row 5: Ch 2, hdc in ea sl st and hdc across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc across, turn.

All sizes: Repeat Decorative Stitch rows 1-4 and Hdc Rows 5-6.

Newborn, Baby, and Toddler sizes: stop and skip down to Brim section.

Child size only: Repeat Decorative Stitch rows 1-4 and Hdc Rows 5-6 again.

Brim:

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc, *sl st, hdc; rep from * across, turn.

Newborn size: stop here and skip down to Ties.

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st, *hdc, sl st; rep from * across, turn.

Row 3: rep row 1.

Baby and Child sizes: stop here and skip down to Ties.

Row 4: rep row 2.

Row 5: rep row 1.

Toddler size: stop here and skip down to Ties.

Ties:

Row 1: Ch 1, sl st, *hdc, sl st; rep from * across.  Do not turn. Ch 35 (45, 45, 45), hdc in third ch from hook and ea ch along tie.

Row 2: Hdc in last sl st from row 1, *sl st, hdc across front of bonnet, do not turn.  Ch 35 (45, 45, 45), hdc in third ch from hook and ea ch along second tie.

Finishing:

Sc along back edge of bonnet until you reach the base of the other tie. Finish off, weave in loose ends.

    Hello,

    I am making aunalie sweater and wanted to make this bonnet….could I use the yarn for the aunalie sweater from knitpicks to make the bonnet? Would I need to use a smaller hook?
